ASM Assembly Systems’ live smart factory at APEX, February 14-17, San Diego, proved to be a visitor magnet.

Surely the most innovative concept at this year’s show, the ASM booth was set up to represent the shop floor of the future, where all the major workflows in an SMT factory were showcased alongside highlights from ASM’s extensive product portfolio. Visitors were taken through the factory on an interactive, self-guided tour which made use of RFID technology and augmented reality loaded onto tablets. The tour included ten stations such as an offline workflow area featuring receiving, setup preparation, feeder setup and NPI, and programming stations that were designed to inspire discussions on how to handle the respective processes and provided hints and solutions how to solve common production challenges with ASM technology. “The idea behind our live smart factory floor was to present our solutions in a way that feels natural to electronics manufacturers – we wanted to move away from the outdated concept of merely displaying solitary machines and theoretical performance values. We delivered proof that the ways to an automated, integrated production are manifold and within anybody’s reach. ASM is the right partner for smart concepts,” said Mark Ogden, ASM Marketing Manager Americas.

ASM’s innovative concept to showcase the company’s comprehensive set of Smart #1 SMT tools was highly appreciated by show visitors. The booth was crowded at all times. During the self-guided booth tours, implemented questions on the way electronics manufacturers ran their own production processes prompted many in-depth discussions.

Each workflow is important on its own

While ASM printers and placement machines like the DEK NeoHorizon and the SIPLACE SX and SIPLACE TX series attracted much interest, the self-guided tour, which led visitors through an SMT factory following the typical path of a component reel, highlighted an important development: “While best-in-class machine equipment is the basis of an efficient SMT production, we see electronics manufacturers are also focused on analyzing the efficiency and flexibility of each of their individual workflows, from material management to setup preparation, changeovers, NPI and so on. We can support them in each of these ventures, with products such as our SIPLACE Material Tower, PSP products, or ASM ProcessExpert,” Ogden said.

At APEX 2017, ASM ProcessExpert, the revolutionary self-learning process control system, was also recognized with the esteemed Circuit’s Assembly NPI Award.
