SHANGHAI -- Some 16 companies, including Foxconn and China Telecom, announced their backing of the 5G industry alliance, announced yesterday here.

Members of the alliance will focus on developing and adoption of ultra high-definition video transferred on 5G networks. Alliance members will develop high-speed 5G and super high-definition video up to 8K technology.

5G networks are said to be 20 to 50 times faster than 4G networks. China is in trials for 5G and a widespread rollout is planned in 2020.
