KAUNAS, LITHUANIA -- Kitron opened a $7.63 million production facility and engineering services center here today, the EMS firm announced.

The 54,000 sq. ft. facility brings the company's total capacity in Kaunas to 140,000 sq. ft. and will create an additional 60 jobs, bringing its employment in the nation to nearly 500. The expansion was first announced in February 2014.

The company will use the site both for manufacturing and new product development with a special focus on engineering services, including prototyping, product design supervision, component engineering, and project management.

"Kitron emphasizes high-value segments of industries with requirements that go beyond competitive price -- segments where specialist competencies are needed, where margins of error are extremely low and where the ability to meet complex and changing customer needs is valued," said Peter Nilsson, CEO of Kitron. "The service part of this business, and especially advanced test development services, is growing. To advance this strategy, our people in Kaunas and the expansion of our facility here play an absolutely vital part."

The company employs 430 workers in Lithuania, where it has become one of the largest electronics manufacturers in Eastern Europe, serving the medical, industrial, alternative energy, marine, and data transmission sectors on behalf of Volvo, Saab, Bombardier, Husqvarna, Emerson and many others.
