PLANO, TX – Flextronics will cut more than 165 workers and consolidate two area EMS plants into one, according to published reports.

While consolidating its Plano and Austin sites, the electronics manufacturer plans to cut 168 employees by 2016 at its Plano plant starting in October.

“We regret the need to take this action, as it is always difficult to initiate a mass layoff,” Flextronics human resources manager Maureen Armstrong said in a letter. "This decision was not taken lightly and is the direct result of a change in Flextronics’ strategy to consolidate our Plano-TX Global Operations Group into our Austin-TX Global Operations Group.”

In the letter, Flextronics said it has notified all affected workers, who are eligible for a severance package.

Flextronics said it is attempting to place some workers at other sites and plans to contact nearby employers about job openings.
