Electra Initiative Could Boost Europe High-Tech Sector Print E-mail

MUNICH – A pair of European trade groups will launch a major policy initiative for the electronics and electrical sectors later this month.

ZVEI and Orgalime will present Electra at the Representation of the Free State of Bavaria to the EU on June 25.

The initiative aims at promoting a vibrant and innovative electronics and electrical industry, while addressing the needs for reaching the so-called 20/20/20 target by 2020, Orgalime said.

The 20/20/20 target refers to a trio of goals, including:
  • 20% increase in energy efficiency.
  • 20% reduction in CO2 emissions.
  • 20% share of renewables in overall EU energy consumption.

While the specific details have not been revealed, according to published reports, the proposals will focus on modernizing the Europe’s high-tech infrastructure, and will take into account venture capital and new benchmarks and best practices for environmental and other controls. Electra is said to be based on an automotive industry growth initiative called CARS21.

ZVEI is a Germany-based electronics engineering trade group with some 1600 members. Orgalime, the European Engineering Industries Association, represents 35 European trade federations in the mechanical, electrical, electronics and other industries.
