TOKYO — A 7.2 magnitude earthquake rocked Kurihari city, north of Tokyo, on Saturday and led to shutdowns of operations at several electronics makers.

A Fujitsu Ltd. semiconductor factory and certain factories affiliated with Sony were shut down, company officials reported. The quake's epicenter was reportedly 5 miles underground in northern Iwate prefecture, about 250 miles northwest of Tokyo.

Fujistu reported damage to production lines at a factory in Iwate, and could not comment on when operations would be running again.

Sony said it automatically shut down some of lines in northern Japan after feeling the quake

The quake reportedly killed six people and triggered massive landslides. It comes just over a month after a 7.8 magnitude quake hit Sichuan Province in China.
