LONDON -- The U.K. Department of Trade and Industry has completed its implementation review of the WEEE directive and is now holding informal discussions with companies on "whether the implementation proposals will deliver the objectives and obligations set by the directive in an effective and efficient way.”

The DTI emphasized, however, that further review of the implementation plans will not be sought.
However, stakeholders are balking at the DTI implementation plan. In response, Dr. Phil Morton, chief executive of the Recycling Electrical Producers’ Industry Consortium, was quoted as saying, “Unfortunately, the DTI review has not adequately addressed the vast collective of producers’ major concerns over allocation, collection and financing. These issues must be resolved if the directive is to succeed here in the U.K. as it has in other parts of Europe.”

Morton said the REPIC continues to hold discussions with DTI over its implementation plan, the report said.

The U.K. WEEE implementation mandates obligatory registration for producers and a system for calculating their obligations, among other requirements.
