PECS, HUNGARY -- Elcoteq's former operations here might be taken over by Flextronics, according to local news reports.

According to Pécs media, Flextronics could be readying to take over operation of the now closed Elcoteq plants.

The deputy mayor of Pécs, Peter Csizi, reportedly has acknowledged that a large multinational company is taking over the space. Flextronics officials have not confirmed the reports, however.

Flextronics already has operations in four cities in Hungary, including Budapest and Tab, and employs 10,000 workers across the nation. It supposedly has won a larger portion of Juniper Networks' router manufacturing from Plexus, and may be looking for additional capacity.

The factory space is ample, at 53,000 sq. m (571,000 sq. ft.). Elcoteq formerly assembled printed circuit boards for flat panel and LCD TV, set-top boxes and mobile phones at the location. The former Elcoteq campus once employed some 6,500 workers. Elcoteq closed the plants after going into bankruptcy in summer 2011. An investigation into its closing on behalf of company's former shareholders is nearing completion.
