DONCASTER, SOUTH YORKSHIRE, UK -- SMT equipment distributor SMT Xtra has purchased the assets of Elcoteq's former plant in Pécs, Hungary for about $10 million.

SMT Xtra executive sales director Susan Cassidy said the deal enables the sales of many "nearly new" SMT machines and test equipment from such OEMs as Fuji, Panasonic, MPM, Electrovert, Cencorp, JOT, Asys, Viscom and Orbotech.

The site closed in late 2011 and putting more than 1,500 employees out of work. At its peak, the site reportedly employed more than 6,500 workers.

Elcoteq went into receivership in 2011. Since then, Eolane and others have been gradually acquiring the former top tier EMS company's assets.

SMT Xtra is a distributor of SMT equipment and spare parts.

Other recent reports indicated Flextronics might have had an interest in the site.
