EINDHOVEN, NETHERLANDS -- Royal Philips Electronics swung to a fourth-quarter loss of $1.9 billion and sales fell 9% to $10.1 billion in the quarter.

The company will lay off 6,000 workers as orders for TVs and multimedia equipment stalled. 

The company reported strength in medical equipment -- up 29% -- but a 32% decline in consumer electronics and other items.
