The proposed bill, which has been introduced in the Senate Environment Committee, would fund research on product design, recycling technology and hazardous materials disposal, according to reports. It would fund The National Academy of Sciences to study product design and recycling, and the National Institute of Standards and Technology to develop a database of environmentally-sound materials for use in electronics manufacturing.

 

Additional monies would be provided toward academic research as well.

 

The bill is said to have bipartisan support. 

 

According to Klobuchar, about 15% of waste electronics in the US are recycled.
