MACAO -- Deswell Industries reported fiscal first-quarter net sales fell 5.9% to $9.7 million in the company's electronic and metallic segment.
Overall net sales for the quarter ended June 30 were $20.5 million, down 9.9% from 2009. The company reported a net loss of $2.2 million, compared to net loss of $300,000 last year. The operating loss in the first quarter was $2.7 million, compared to an operating loss of $300,000 a year ago.
Gross profit margin in the electronic and metallic segment decreased to 7.5% of net sales, from 10% for the year-ago quarter, mainly from a drop in sales caused by material shortages and supply slippage.
Deswell manufactures electronics products and subassemblies, including printed circuit boards.
