CHENNAI -- Sanmina-SCI workers here entered their second day of strikes over wages and health benefits, according to published reports.
The workers seek higher wages after three years of pay freezes, said union officials, reports the IANS news service. It is the second time the workers have struck since last fall.
P. Balaji, treasurer of the workers union, said the electronics manufacturing services company has engaged in talks over the past two quarters but has not acceded to worker demands. "The company held talks with the workers for the past six months and finally refused to entertain any of our demands. Last September, we struck work and we were told the issues could be sorted out," he was quoted as saying.
The site employs a reported 1,200 workers, about 850 of which are permanent.
