SINGAPORE -- Flextronics will sell its Vista Point Technologies camera module business to a subsidiary of Tessera. Terms were not disclosed.

Under the definitive agreement, DigitalOptics Corp. will acquire certain assets of Vista Point, including intellectual property and China-based manufacturing operations. The transaction is subject to certain closing conditions.

Flextronics will certain Vista Point engineering talent in order to focus on its ongoing manufacturing services.

"This move allows Flextronics to strengthen our position in power and manufacturing services for future growth," said Mike McNamara, chief executive, Flextronics. "Our deep technical expertise and tremendous manufacturing scale differentiate Flextronics as the leading partner for customers seeking to ramp increasingly complex, highly-integrated products into volume production."

Flextronics was among the first electronics manufacturing services companies to recognize that cellphones were about to adopt camera technologies, and bought up a large amount of camera module capacity in the early 2000s. The EMS company recently exited the heavily commoditized PC design and manufacturing business in hopes of improving operating margins.

Flextronics also named  Chris Cook president, Power and Advanced Manufacturing Solutions. Cook has 20 years' experience in semiconductor businesses, most recently at Infineon Technologies.
