SON, NETHERLANDS -- Neways Electronics reported first-quarter net sales rose 1.4% year-over-year to EUR 73.3 million, on stronger medical and semiconductor demand.

The electronics manufacturing services company, which reports net income on a semiannual basis, said profit was "in line with expectations." Orders were up 1.3% sequentially. The results were affected by startup costs due to new programs and capacity utilization, and a reorganization at its Neways Electronics Production site in Kassel, Germany.

The contract printed circuit board assembler said first-quarter demand was high relative to the typical January to March period.

Neways said the outlook remains unclear, with customers postponing orders more quickly and more readily, but are also reordering again more quickly.
