TAIYUAN, SHANXI, CHINA -- Foxconn shut a local factory that builds casings for Apple's iPhone following a massive riot that pit thousands of employees against company guards.

The riots, said to involve at least 2,000 of the campus's 79,000 workers, escalated after an altercation between a company guard and an employee. At least 40 persons were taken to the hospital, according to published reports.

Police in riot gear have been photographed at the scene, along with trash and an overturned guard tower, according to NBC and Reuters.

Residents have taken to Weibo, China's version of Twitter, uploading photos (see below) and video of police at the site.

The factory builds metal casings for the Apple iPhone. Workers also went on strike there in March over wages.

Taiyuan is the capital and largest city of the Shanxi province, in North China.
