NEW DEHLI, INDIA -- India will consider changes to its policy of encouraging government and private industry to buy electronics made domestically after several large multinational OEMs complained.

When the procurement policy went into effect last year, India's government called it an issue of national security. Others, however, said it was a transparent attempt to protect India's manufacturers.

Among those complaining included the Information Technology Industry Council, which represents some 52 companies including Apple and Intel.

It's difficult to say that the India supply base could have kept up with the potential demand. Imports already make up more than 40% of the nation's electronics consumption, and that ratio is expected to rise as the country's appetite for electronics far outstrips its domestic capacity.
