JAKARTA, INDONESIA -- Samsung Electronics plans to establish a major cellphone manufacturing facility in Indonesia by year-end, according to reports.

The site in West Java will ultimately be capable of producing nearly one million units per month, a government spokesman told Reuters.

"We have been discussing with the Indonesian government of our plan to produce mobile phones for the domestic market, so that we can meet local consumers' need more effectively," Samsung told Reuters.

Capacity will start at 100,000 units and build to 900,000 units per month, the news service reported, citing Indonesia director general of high-tech industry Budi Darmadi.
