TAIPEI -- Quanta Computer will move into the crowded cellphones outsourcing market, with orders in hand and production slated to begin by year-end, according to a published report.

Quanta is Tawain's largest maker of notebook PCs, and produces almost one-third of the global supply. However, according to the report, Quanta will initially build cellphones for top OEMs, including Nokia and Sony Ericsson.
Last year Quanta shipped 19 million notebook PCs, and forecasts more than 25 million units this year. The company estimates the global notebook market to top 90 million units this year.

The company forecasts 2007 revenues of $18.18 billion, up from 15.15 billion last year.

CEO Wang Cheng-hua reportedly said Quanta could beat out other major EMS handset makers, including Flextronics, Solectron and Jabil Circuit, as a top supplier to Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson.

Quanta has already received orders from its main targets, Nokia and Sony Ericsson, the report stated. The orders, worth about $300,000, are slated to be filled by the end of this year or early next year.

The timing is interesting as Quanta has been dispelling rumors of an imminent merger with Hon Hai, the world's largest contract assembler.
