BANNOCKBURN, IL -- A proposed standard covering halogens in electronics products is being circulated to industry for review and vote.

IPC/JEDEC JP-709, A Guideline for Defining "Low-Halogen" Electronic Products, has caused controversy as critics claim the document will create a de facto regulation that could add cost for suppliers without addressing the environmental problem it purports to resolve.

The document, comment form and definitions document as well as a copy of the resolved comments from the first ballot are contained in a zip file that can be downloaded through the following link: http://members.ipc.org/committee/drafts/4-33a_d_JP709PSB2.zip.

According to an IPC staff member who circulated the proposed standard, anyone is welcome to submit comments and ballots. This following link can be used to submit a ballot: surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=zlAs_2foDkWDDmpIf7khSwQg_3d_3d.
