TORONTO -- Celestica said first-quarter revenue was $1.299 billion, down 1% year-over-year.

Net income nearly doubled, however, to $37.3 million.

The EMS company had previously guided for sales of $1.275 billion to $1.375 billion for the period. Revenue from the diversified end-market, which includes aerospace, military, medical and automotive, represented 28% of total revenue, communications was at 40% and storage 18%.

Operating margin was 3.1%, flat compared to the first quarter 2014. The firm generated $22 million in free cash for the quarter.

"Celestica delivered revenue and adjusted earnings per share in line with our guidance, said president and chief executive Craig Muhlhauser. "Despite a challenging demand environment, we also delivered year-over-year improvement in free cash flow, driven by our continued strong operational performance throughout our global network."

For the second quarter ending June 30, the firm guided for revenue in the range of $1.35 billion to $1.45 billion.
