BOSTON – Electronics New England is not an oxymoron.
That much was made clear this week as easily more than 1,000 attendees visited the two-day trade show here at the vast Boston Convention Center. Despite several high-profile plant closings so far this year – Plexus in Ayer, MA, and Jabil in Billerica, MA among them – many of the smaller EMS shops remain on par with last year, even if the outlook is as cloudy as ever.
NEWARK, NY -- EMS provider IEC's net sales rose 37% to $16.3 million for the period ended March 27.
ANGLETON, TX -- Benchmark Electronics reported March quarter sales of $497 million, down 27% from last year.
TORONTO -- Celestica's chief executive indicated the fourth-largest EMS company could potentially use some of its more than $1 billion in cash to buy other companies during the downturn.
AESCH, SWITZERLAND -- SMT process equipment supplier Essemtec today said March sales were up 15% and "the bottom has been reached."
MALMO, SWEDEN -- PartnerTech reported first-quarter net sales of fell 3% from a year ago to SEK 594.2 million (US$71.1 million).
