NEENAH, WI -- Plexus Corp. is headed to Romania. The EMS company has signed a deal to lease a 72,000 sq. ft. facility in Oradea, on the Hungary/Romania border, its first in the Eastern European nation.

Production in Oradea is expected to begin in the second half of fiscal 2009 and will target European OEMs and products to be sold in Europe.

Plexus said Oradea was chosen for its skilled labor pool and local universities that teach electronics manufacturing.

The move is the first phase of Plexus' lower-cost European manufacturing strategy, the company said in a press release. The company also has a manufacturing facility in Kelso, Scotland, and offers design services in Livingston, Scotland.

In a press release, senior VP, global customer services Todd Kelsey said, "Our customers believe that the mid-to low-volume, higher-mix segment of the EMS industry is underserved in Europe, creating an opportunity for us to expand our regional footprint and exploit the growing demand for our services in the region. We believe that the Oradea facility will provide our global customers with a lower total-cost European solution, particularly for products with European end-markets."
