TAIPEI -- Foxconn plans to open up to 10,000 retail stores in China, hoping to raise brand awareness and lure even more manufacturing contracts, local media is reporting.

The stores likely will carry Apple's iPhone and PCs, Sony's Playstation and PCs, Amazon's Kindle, Nokia's phones and Nintendo's Wii, according to the China Daily.

All of those OEMs outsource to Foxconn (Hon Hai).

The EMS/ODM company also may use its retail channel to win manufacturing business from major OEMs like HP and Dell, which could leverage the contract assembler's manufacturing and retail operations, The Washington Post reported today.

Though notorious in manufacturing circles, the Foxconn brand is essentially unknown to consumers.
