SINGAPORE -- Surface Mount Technology Holdings, a top 50 EMS company, reported March quarter sales of HK$523.4 million ($67.1 million), up 31.6% from a year ago.

The net loss was HK$10.9 million ($1.4 million), half of last year's HK$21.9 million loss.

The company noted a gradual increase in orders since December, mainly from LED backlight products for LCD TV, hard disk drives, electronic shelf edge labels and security devices.

For the fiscal year ended March 31, the company reported sales fell 28% to HK$1,866.7 million ($241.8 million). The loss widened 46% to HK$53.2 million ($6.8 million).

LED lighting is a new segment for the company, and it made up 21% of sales for the quarter. Industrial controls remains the largest segment, at 29%, followed by computer peripherals (21%), LEDs, and automotive (14%).

By region, 57% of sales came from Japan, followed by Korea (21%) and North America and Europe (15%).

The company said the outlook for 2010 remains positive, despite rising wages in China, shortages in energy supply and labor, and price increases in raw
materials and electronics components.
