STERLING, MA – A longtime veteran of the electronics equipment wars has now turned his sites to an even bigger forum -- cancer -- and is enlisting the aid of former colleagues in the fight.

Jeff Mogensen, the former vice president of sales at Speedline Technologies, will hold a charity event benefiting The Lance Armstrong Foundation, Livestrong, through an industry-wide electronics equipment auction.

The program provides donors an opportunity to sell their equipment in a one-time, online public auction, with profits going to Livestrong.

“The concept is fairly straightforward. The program really creates a win-win situation for everyone involved, especially the cancer community. It creates an environment in which companies can easily participate, make a big difference and reduce financial impact,” Mogensen said.

Mogensen is gaining support, with early supporters including X-Line Assets, KIC Thermal Systems and CIRCUITS ASSEMBLY.

“Nearly 1 in 2 men and 1 in 3 women will develop cancer during their lifetime,” said Mike Buetow, editor-in-chief of CIRCUITS ASSEMBLY. “We tend to get caught up in the day-to-day of running our businesses, and forget that for many people, life means something much more precious than winning that next order. Jeff’s efforts will go a long way toward keeping us grounded.”

“I’m behind the cause 100%,” added Andrew Joos of X-Line Assets. “Everyone knows someone who has been affected by cancer.”

X-Line is researching tax law to determine whether buyers could deduct some of the purchase price as a charitable contribution. “The real incentive,” Joos says, “would be for a customer to pay close to actual value for a new or refurbished machine, and also get the tax deduction.”

X-Line Assets and CIRCUITS ASSEMBLY are underwriting the marketing and certain logistics of the auction.

"We’ve all been affected in so many ways either personally or with friends and family who have been diagnosed with this disease. It’s my honor to do what I can to support those affected and in some way try to help create a world that is cancer-free,” Mogensen said.
