NEWARK, NY -- IEC Electronics reported September quarter net income of $1.6 million, up 78% from a year ago.

For the quarter, the EMS company reported revenue of $27.3 million, up 49% on higher demand and acquisitions. Operating income increased 50% to $2.1 million

For its fiscal year ended Sept. 30, the contract electronics assembler's revenue rose 43% to $96.7 million. Net income was $4.7 million, down slightly from $5 million last year. Thr 2009 results included a $1.9 million tax benefit.

In a statement, chairman and CEO W. Barry Gilbert said, "We continue to improve our operating performance and make solid inroads into the medical sector. Our backlog grew substantially, closing over $90 million compared to fiscal 2009. More than half of the increase was attributable to organic growth."

Medical now represents 12.6% of revenue, military 49%, industrial 20% and aerospace 9.2%.

"We believe our military and aerospace sectors will remain strong but anticipate that the industrial sector is likely to remain under pressure for most of 2011," Gilbert said. "We can continue to expand our presence in medical."h the Sec
