BEIJING — Lenovo and Compal will form a joint venture to build notebook computers, the companies said today.
In a press release, the two firms said they would invest $300 million in the joint venture, 51% of which will be owned by Lenovo. Full-scale production is planned for late next year, with a production capacity of over 10 million units a year.
Lenovo is the world's third-largest PC maker, at 12% of total shipments last quarter, behind H-P (18%) and Dell (13%).
Compal, a major PC ODM, already has strong ties to Lenovo. According to Compal, Acer, Dell and Lenovo make up its top three customers. Lenovo formerly was IBM's PC manufacturing business unit.
