HELSINKI -- Scanfil EMS Oy reported net profits of EUR 1.2 million ($1.57 million) despite weak demand for telecommunications, offset in part by strong demand for professional electronics products.

Scanfil EMS was formed as a demerger from Sievi Capital on Jan. 1, and the 2011 results are based on the EMS unit's operations prior to the separation.

March quarter sales were EUR 42.6 million, down from EUR 58.8 million a year ago. Cash flow from operations was EUR 3.2 million. Net income a year ago was EUR 2.6 million.

Sales by region were Finland 47%, rest of Europe 19%, Asia 33%, USA 1%. The company's Chinese subsidiaries’ sales accounted for 36% of the Group’s sales during the period. Professional electronics customers accounted for 76% of total sales for the quarter, telecommunications for 24%.

The operating profit was EUR 1.4 million, down from EUR 3.6 million. Operating profit was EUR 1 million excluding nonrecurring items. Scanfil also announced it won an arbitration judgment against Ojala-Yhtymä Oy worth EUR 2 million, interest and court costs. During the quarter, Scanfil took nonrecurring charges of EUR 1.2 million for damages related to Ojala-Yhtymä Oy, listing expenses of  EUR 400,000, and another EUR 400,000 in provisional expenses related to the restructuring of its Hangzhou subsidiary. The company also announced it would lay off 64 workers at its Sievi, Finland, plant.
