WARRENDALE, PA -- SAE International has published a standard governing procurement practices to ensure valid components.

SAE's G-21 Counterfeit Materiel Committee yesterday issued "AS6174 – Counterfeit Materiel; Assuring Acquisition of Authentic and Conforming Materiel." The new document standardizes practices to maximize availability of authentic materiel -- that is, made from proper materials using proper processes with required testing.

The standard sets forth measures for procuring materiel from reliable sources and assuring the authenticity and conformance of procured materiel.

It further lays out means to control materiel identified as counterfeit, and report that materiel to other potential users and government investigative authorities.

SAE uses the less conventional term "materiel" to refer to equipment and supplies, including components.
