SAN FRANCISCO -- Longtime Fabrinet customer Opnext is broadening its supply base for optical components and networks.

Opnext has engaged a second contract manufacturer and has provided equipment for sample production, although it has not yet signed a contract. Opnext did not disclose the EMS firm's identity, but it is possible it is Venture Corp. Opnext is merging with competitor Oclaro, which in turn has a deal in place to transfer its Shenzhen manufacturing facility to the Singapore-based electronics manufacturing services firm.

Fabrinet’s builds Opnext's 10G products at its Pinehurst campus in Thailand. Some of Fabrinet's Thailand sites were hit hard by last fall's floods, but 10G manufacturing capacity has now returned to pre-flood levels.

Opnext also builds higher-end 40G to 100G systems at its in-house factories in California.
