SHANGHAI -- Up to 6,000 workers at a Flextronics plant here reportedly are striking over plans to relocate production to a Suzhou plant.

According to China Labor Watch, a workers' rights group, about 6,000 workers have walked out on the job in a dispute over severance pay after the firm announced the move to Suzhou. The strike, which started Monday, is now entering its third day.

According to China Labor Watch, the contract assembler did not discuss the move with workers prior to its decision, and later told the workers that if they did not move to Suzhou with the factory, then they would be choosing to resign without severance pay.

Workers at Flextronics Shanghai typically work 10 hours per day, 6 days per week, with a monthly income of 2,300 RMB ($365), China Labor Watch said. Workers in the Suzhou Wuzhong factory of Flextronics work up to 100 hours of overtime per month, earning 2,200 RMB. By moving its factory, Flextronics is almost certainly trying to take advantage of the lower labor standards in Suzhou.

“The primary reason that these workers are striking is that Flextronics never spoke with the workers about the move, choosing not to give the workers any right to negotiation," China Labor Watch Director Li Qiang said. " These workers already have families in Shanghai—their kids are in Shanghai—so it is not easy for them to move to Suzhou.”

Flextronics has not commented on the action.

The Shanghai plant is located in the Jiading district. It was established in 2001 and makes printers and other components. Flextronics has other sites in the Shanghai area, including an automotive factory in Pudong.
