ANGLETON, TX -- Benchmark Electronics has acquired Suntron for an as-yet undisclosed sum, according to an announcement to the latter's customers being circulated on Benchmark letterhead and dated June 3.

As of this morning, the Suntron website redirects to the Benchmark website.

According to the letter, from Benchmark CEO and president Gayla Delly, the transaction includes personnel and manufacturing facilities in Phoenix and Tijuana.

"The Suntron sites will be organized within our North American Operations organization reporting to Benchmark Group President, Calvin Clemons. We believe this transaction is good for you, our customer, and for Benchmark. We have a strong organization supporting the local teams you are familiar with to service your needs, and we have the financial strength to support your future growth," the letter said.

Once one of the larger EMS companies in the US, Suntron has been selling or closing facilities for years. Most recently, it shuttered a massive plant in Sugarland, TX, that was once the headquarters for K-Tec Electronics, and split and sold its Metheun, MA, site to EIT and Axiomtek. Its estimated sales are now between $70 and $100 million. It now has two plants in Phoenix plus one in Mexico.

Suntron was formed in 2002 from the remainder of the merger of K*Tec Electronics and EFTC. At its peak, it operated more than a dozen plants and boasted revenues in excess of $500 million.
