MINNEAPOLIS -- SMTA reported registration for its annual trade show increased 20% year-over-year, while on-site attendance rose 30% from last year's event.

SMTA International, which took place the last week of September in the Chicago suburbs, reported a total registration of just under 1,600, not including more than 900 exhibitor personnel who also signed up.

The move to Rosemont, just north of Chicago's O'Hare Airport, was seen as a positive by many attendees on-site. International attendance was comparable to last year with attendees representing 21 different countries.

The technical conference included such events as The Evolving Technologies Summit, which covered key technologies such as embedded technology, 3D printing, and nano fillers, and the Lead-Free Soldering Technology Symposium kept the meeting room packed until the very end of the conference. The keynote, by Cisco vice president Jeff Gallinat, on the Internet of Everything, was also standing room only.

Over 160 exhibiting companies filled the sold-out exhibit hall.

Next year's SMTAI will be held Sept. 27 - Oct. 1, also in Rosemont, IL. The IPC Fall Standards Development Committee Meetings will again be co-located with SMTAI.

Last year's show was in Ft. Worth, TX. The last time SMTAI was in Chicago was 2006.
