CHENNAI -- The intensity surrounding Foxconn's decision to close its manufacturing plant here ramped today as more than 500 workers reportedly tried to enter the site.

Police are said to have made hundreds of arrests in their efforts to control the crowd, many of whom came to the site a day ago only to find the doors locked and their jobs in limbo.

A Foxconn executive reportedly told The Economic Times that workers were trying to get inside in order to register their attendance, presumably to put themselves in line to be paid.

About 1,700 workers were employed at the Foxconn factory, which is located on the Nokia Telecom campus and supplied assemblies to the Finnish OEM.

Foxconn has noted that demand for Nokia phones has abated and that the plant is no longer viable.
