BATH, WILTSHIRE, UK – New guidance from the European Chemicals Agency last month changes companies’ obligations to inform customers about substances covered by the REACH Directive, and will be the subject of a pair of webinars later this month.

Companies now have to inform customers if any articles in their products contain Substances of Very High Concern greater than 0.1% by weight of the article, instead of by weight of the product, and provide information on safe use according to ECA guidance published Dec. 17. The new rules cover 168 Candidate List SVHC in their products, and followed a European Court of Justice (ECJ) ruling on Sept. 10.

The 168 SVHCs are substances known to cause cancer, change genetic material to cause mutations, cause birth defects and impair children’s development, and are poisonous or have similar effects on human health and the environment.

BOMCheck.net is hosting two free webinars on Jan. 26 to discuss recent changes to REACH compliance. Participants will hear how Siemens, Philips, GE Healthcare, and others have implemented ECHA recommendations to share chemicals knowledge to screen out 96 SVHC substances not relevant to the electrotechnical industry and establish supply chain communication standards and systems to collect information on safe use from suppliers.
