CHENNAI, INDIA -- Foxconn reportedly is zeroing in on a new campus in the Chennai area -- one it has prior experience with.
According to a report in the Times of India, Foxconn will carve out a section of the 150 acre campus in Sunguvarchatram, in the northeastern corner of the Indian state of Tamil Nadu, about 40km from Chennai. Plans call for the EMS firm to build on a 10-acre section, and are contingent on certain Indian government tax accommodations.
Foxconn, the report said, seeks a government declaration of a domestic tariff area for the Sunguvarchatram site, which would grant the company the right to sell products built there in India. The campus is currently zoned as a Special Economic Zone, meaning products should be exported.
The plant was temporarily shut down multiple times over the year due to health concerns. It also was the scene of a riot among workers in 2012.
Foxconn had a factory in about 10km away in Sriperumbudur, which it shuttered under contentious circumstances in November 2014. It reopened the site there in 2015.
