ELK GROVE, CA -- A California-based EMS company is planning a second facility here, enticed by local incentives and industry trends toward onshoring.

NRC Manufacturing, which is based in Fremont, is in negotiations to build a 50,000 sq. ft. plant here, where it would employ more than 620 full-time workers.

The plans ultimately call for a 230,000 sq. ft. facility here, roughly 2 hours northeast of the Silicon Valley. It would open in 2017, reports said.

NRC plans to use the site for higher volume production, while its Fremont plant would build prototypes for customers which include Apple. Apple and another EMS firm, Pegatron, are reportedly expanding in Elk Grove as well.

Local media reported NRC chief financial officer David Hang saying the Sacramento suburb is financially very attractive to the EMS company. “Elk Grove geographically made sense, (and) also because overhead (in Elk Grove) is much less than Silicon Valley.” He added that the company studied offshore sites but decided to stay in the US because the trend is toward building closer to the end-market.
