Clinton, NY -- Dr. Ning-Cheng Lee, vice president of technology at Indium Corp., will receive the 2006 Exceptional Technical Achievement Award from the IEEE Components, Packaging and Manufacturing Technology (CPMT) Society. Dr. Lee was selected for his contributions to surface-mount technology and electronics packaging assembly. 
This annual award recognizes contributions to new and important technology or products that advance the fields encompassed by the CPMT Society. The award presentation will take place on June 1, as part of the Electronics Components and Technology Conference (ECTC) in San Diego.
 
Dr. Lee was named SMTA Member of Distinction in 2002 and received the Soldertec Global Lead-Free Solder Award in 2003. He is also an SMTA board member, liaison to the Taiwan SMTA chapter, coordinator and chair of the 2005 Nepcon Shanghai technical program, and author of two books and over 100 technical papers.
SAN JOSE -- Flextronics International today agreed to sell a majority stake in its software development business to private-equity firm Kohlberg Kravis for $900 million. Flextronics expects to receive $600 million in cash consideration and $250 million in notes with a 10.5% paid-in-kind interest coupon which matures in eight years.

Flextronics expects to net $175 million after taxes upon closing, which is expected this summer.

SALT LAKE CITY -- CirTran Corp. reported record sales and narrowed its net loss by 20% for its fiscal year ended Dec. 31.

The contract manufacturer reported a net loss of $527,708 on net sales of $12.99 million, up 46.6% from fiscal 2004. Gross profit rose 243% to $6.3 million.

FRANKLIN, MA – The U.S. Patent Office has issued a patent to Speedline Technologies for the method first used its Accela printer’s stencil wiper system.

US Patent no. 7,017,489 covers a method used to minimize downtime from wiper service during the printing operation. This method can be used on screen and stencil printers.

Joe Perault, Speedline manager of applications engineering, is credited with the invention.  Read more ...
GREENVILLE, SC -- Kemet Corp. has completed its previously announced acquisition of Epcos AG's tantalum capacitor business for 86.5 million euros (approximately $103 million). Kemet is paying $81.3 million in cash and the rest in assumed liabilities and working capital adjustments.

The acquisition includes the Epcos tantalum capacitor manufacturing operation in Evora, Portugal, plus certain R&D, marketing and sales functions in various locations, primarily within Europe.

The deal does not include Epcos's tantalum capacitor manufacturing facility in Heidenheim, Germany.  Epcos' will continue to produce product exclusively for Kemet at the Heidenheim facility. Once the transition is completed, in September, Kemet will purchase the Heidenheim manufacturing assets.

About $93.5 million of the deal is tied to the closing. The remainder will be paid when the manufacturing and supply agreement expires in September.


BURLINGTON, VT -- The 50 largest EMS companies topped $100 billion in sales for the first time, accounting for 2005 revenue of $109.2 billion.

Combined sales for top 50 companies grew 14.4% in 2005. Growth was heavily influenced by the estimated results of Hon Hai Precision Industry (Foxconn);  without Hon Hai, the remaining 49 providers produced an aggregate growth of 3.1%.

SAN JOSE -- Hammer Storage, a division of Bell Microproducts, has added the Hammer NA-1400 Network-Attached Storage Appliance to its product line.

The high capacity device provides up to two terabytes of external storage in a compact, toaster-sized package. It is designed by Newisys Inc., a developer of computing and storage designs, and manufactured by its parent company Sanmina-SCI.
COLUMBIA, MD - Shimadzu Scientific Instruments (SSI), a developer of analytical instrumentation, has a new, free white paper entitled “Understanding RoHS.” The paper is available at ssi.shimadzu.com.

FT. WORTH, TX Allied Electronics has broken ground on its new headquarters and distribution center in Fort Worth.

The catalog distributor,  a subsidiary of Electrocomponents, began construction on a 365,000-sq. ft. facility that will replace the company’s existing rented space. The new facility will help accommodate the company’s growth, as it expects to create an additional 300 jobs over the next several years.

Construction is expected to be completed as early as summer 2007.

SANTA CLARA, CA -- Blade Network Technologies has begun shipping RoHS-compliant servers in advance of pending legislation in Europe and California, the company announced today.

The servers are built by Solectron Corp. in Charlotte, NC

SALT LAKE CITY -- CirTran Corp. said today that it has settled all major litigation in which it was a defendant, clearing the way for the filing of Form 10-KSB for fiscal 2005 with the SEC later this week.

The EMS company had been involved in a breach of contract filing dating to Sept. 11, 2003. The suit was settled for $200,000, on Feb. 24, according to court filings and company statements.

As of Dec. 23, the interest rate will be 6.84%. The maturity date is Dec. 23, 2015.
