INCHEON, SOUTH KOREA -- A horrific fire at an electronics factory here Tuesday killed nine workers and injured a half-dozen others.
Officials said the death toll could rise as they survey the aftermath.
The exact cause has not been disclosed, but reports said the fire occurred of the fourth floor of Sail Electronics in a room where PCB inspection is performed. The fire quickly consumed a good portion of that floor and caused damage to lower ones as well. Some reports indicate survivors said the building's sprinkler system was not triggered. A spokesperson for Sail Electronics denied that report.
Local reports indicate some of the 20 workers working on the fourth floor were unable to evacuate and jumped to their deaths. Five bodies were found in the production room and two more in the company's cafeteria.
According to reports, Sail was founded in 1989 and has annual sales of 200 billion won ($178 million).
