BENGALURU - Wistron this weekend fired the head of its electronics factory in Narasapur, India, where workers upset over missing pay caused millions of dollars of damage to the plant.

Wistron said India vice president Vincent Lee has been let go amid disciplinary actions to be taken against unspecified officials.

In a statement, Wistron acknowledged its mistakes, saying, "We deeply regret this and apologize to all of our workers. Some of the processes we put in place to manage labor agencies and payments need to be strengthened and upgraded. We are taking immediate action to correct this, including disciplinary action.

"We are removing the vice president who oversees our business in India. We are also enhancing our processes and restructuring our teams to ensure these issues cannot happen again. Our top priority is to ensure all workers are fully compensated immediately,” the company said in a statement on Saturday."

Wistron was responding to an outburst of violence by thousands of workers over the EMS company's failure to pay certain dues. The company said the damage to the plant could reach up to $7 million.

The outburst at the plant, which makes iPhones, incurred the wrath of Apple, which put the company on probation. Apple said the site won't be eligible for new programs until problems are cleared up.
