GARY, INDIANA – The city of Gary is suing Akyumen Technologies for failing to live up to its plans to build a smartphone manufacturing assembly plant here.
The suit claims Akyumen failed to pay $2.5 million to the Genesis Convention Center by Jul. 27, placing the firm in default and in breach of contract.
The planned 200,000 sq. ft. plant was slated to be located at the Genesis Convention Center and Ivanhoe Gardens. In its suit, the city seeks the return of the abandoned project site.
The investment was supposed to create more than 2,000 jobs over three to five years. The city is now looking at other options.
