HSINCHU, TAIWAN – Foxconn has purchased a 6" wafer fabrication plant here from Macronix International for NT$2.5 billion ($90.8 million), according to reports.

Foxconn is looking to produce automotive chips for the electric vehicle market.

The purchase is expected to be finalized by the end of 2021. The plant isn’t currently operational.

Foxconn chairman Liu Young-way said the fab will produce 15,000 wafers monthly by 2024, supplying silicon carbide semiconductors for 30,000 EVs each month.

"The 6" fab might no longer be the best fit for Macronix, and Foxconn saw it as a very good opportunity," he said.

The fab is expected to become Foxconn’s global semiconductor headquarters.
