CHENNAI – Larsen & Toubro (L&T) is exploring a major expansion into the EMS sector, with preliminary discussions underway with the Tamil Nadu government for approximately 200 acres of land near Chennai.
According to multiple reports, L&T aims to establish an integrated, end-to-end electronics manufacturing facility that goes beyond component assembly. The project would mark a strategic shift for the company as it looks to diversify from its core heavy engineering and infrastructure operations into high-value electronics production.
Sources suggest that L&T’s focus will likely center on industrial electronics, automotive modules, aerospace components and Internet of Things (IoT) systems, areas where the company already holds technical expertise, rather than consumer electronics such as smartphones.
The initiative aligns with India’s national “Make in India” and semiconductor growth strategies, which aim to attract global and domestic investment in electronics manufacturing. If realized, the project could become a cornerstone of Tamil Nadu’s ambition to position itself as a premier electronics and semiconductor manufacturing hub.
