SAN JOSE -- The Semiconductor Industry Association today applauded congressional action to provide a significant increase in federal funding for the National Science Foundation in 2006.

Congress appropriated $5.65 billion for the NSF, an increase of 3.3% over last year.
"Congressional action increasing the National Science Foundation funding shows that our national leaders understand the critical importance of basic research in ensuring U.S. leadership in science and technology," said SIA president George Scalise, in a press statement.

Scalise singled out Senators Richard Shelby and Barbara Mikulski and Representatives Frank Wolf and Alan Mollohan for credit for securing additional support for basic research at NSF.
