GENEVASTMicroelectronics is closing two U.S. wafer fabs and an IC assembly site.

During the next few years, STMicroelectronics said it will terminate operations at its 6" wafer fab in Carrollton, TX, and its 8"-fab in Phoenix, ending the company’s U.S. manufacturing operations.

The company is also shutting down its backend packaging and test facility in Ain Sebaa, Morocco.

These moves will affect about 4,000 employees globally, the company said. The company expects to offer transfers or transition-based incentives to most involved.

The company is migrating global 6" wafer production to Singapore and 8" facilities worldwide, which will reportedly save $150 million annually. Carlo Bozotti, president and CEO, said the moves are intended to cut costs.
