TAIPEI -- Flextronics is upping the ante in the notebook PC wars, as the EMS firm reportedly is set to add 1,500 workers to its Taiwan-based unit.

FLEXComputing, the company's notebook unit, currently employs about 500 workers in Taiwan, Reuters said today.

The hires offset nearly 1,400 workers laid off by Flextronics when it closed its manufacturing plant in Malaysia.

Flextronics has been pushing hard into the notebook market, acquiring Arima Computer in March-April 2008. The company has set a unit target of annual sales of $3.5 billion by March 2011, Reuters said, citing company sources.

Flextronics conducts PC research and design in Taiwan, and builds most product for the group at the former Arima plant in Wujiang, China.
