MANCHESTER, ENGLAND -- New academic research argues that Apple could bring back its manufacturing to the US and still earn billions each year, debunking the company's contention that the US is not competitive.
While low labor costs favored Asia 30 years ago much has changed since, conclude researchers at The University of Manchester's Center for Research on Socio-Cultural Change. Using existing research and their own models, the authors found that changing business models and global supply chains benefit certain companies at the expense of the nations where they do business.
"If Apple were willing to accept lower margins and the 8 hours of assembly labor on the iPhone were onshore and paid at US rates, Apple would still have a gross margin of nearly 50%," says Dr. Adam Leaver, who headed the team.
The paper, "Apple Business Model: Financialization across the Pacific," includes a case study that deconstructs Apple's financial success and its trans-Pacific relations with its Foxconn. The paper observes that the rise of the post national corporate player changes the alignment between large corporate interests and the US economy where Apple hoards its cash surplus and the success for the stockholders does not align with the broader needs of the US economy and society.
"Apple should not be an object of praise and emulation because its business model is not generalizable without harm to the U.S. and limited benefit to China," the researchers state.
