LOS ANGELES -- Ducommun last night reported a big first-quarter jump on sales, primarily the result of its acquisition of LaBarge.

For the period ended March 31, the contract electronics assembly segment reported net sales for the quarter of $110.1 million, up from $27.3 million in 2011, reflecting sales of $84.4 million from the acquisition of LaBarge. Operating income was $8.3 million, up from $2.1 million in 2011. Adjusted EBITDA was $13.2 million, compared with $3 million a year ago.

Overall net sales for the period increased 85% to $184.3 million. Net income fell $500,000 for the period to $2.4 million. Cash flow used in operations was $4.8 million, an improvement of $20.5 million versus the prior-year period, and Ducommun ended the quarter with a record backlog of approximately $647 million.

“Our first quarter showed strong commercial aerospace growth and improvement in many of our financial metrics,” said Anthony J. Reardon, president and chief executive. “Adjusted EBITDA climbed to 10.3% of revenue from 9.1% in the first quarter of 2011, and we reduced our seasonal cash usage by $20.5 million versus first quarter 2011."

He added that aerospace demand was increasing, offset in part by near-term weakness in the industrial and natural resources end-markets.
