ROME, NYIndium has acquired a new manufacturing facility here, near its existing plant. The plant is currently being outfitted to expand production capacities of compounds, including indium-, gallium-, germanium-, and tin-based materials.

Terms were not disclosed, but the city and state provided several incentives to keep the solder manufacturer in the area:

* $1 million from the state in grants and tax credits, depending on Indium meeting job retention goals.
* $450,000 in tax-relief incentives from Oneida County over the next 10 years.
* $100,000 from the city of Rome.

The firm is installing manufacturing equipment, processes, and analytical capabilities to address demand for high-performance materials. The enhanced capabilities will enable conversion of a wider range of feed materials into high-purity compounds and the recycling of customers’ reclaim streams, the company says.

The new plant is sized to accommodate future expansion of upstream and downstream processes.

Indium currently employs 350 workers in the area, and reportedly will maintain its existing plant in West Utica, but will not use it for higher-end processing.
